What is UBD Group?

UBD Group transforms MINUS into PLUS.

Unpaid Bill Drawings (UBD) is an ongoing art project by artist and CEO of UBD Group, Sandra Hauser.

The starting capital of UBD Group is -€73,630.67 — the personal debt of artist Sandra Hauser.

Invoices, reminders, demands for payment and other documents recording financial obligations become the material for a continuously growing series of drawings. Hauser works directly on the original documents first soaking them in linseed oil and then using fineliner, pencil, crayon, acrylic and other materials for the drawings. The bill remains part of the work — as its surface, its history and its actual economic value.

Each Unpaid Bill Drawing therefore begins with a real debt.

The principle of UBD Group is simple: the artwork can be acquired by paying the bill connected to it directly to its creditor. Instead of buying an art piece, the buyer settles the corresponding outstanding debt directly with its creditor. Once the creditor has received the money, the drawing changes ownership.

In this way, UBD Group creates a direct circuit between debt, artistic production and collecting. It also makes collecting accessible to people with lower incomes, as the values of our Unpaid Bill Drawings range from €10 to €20,088.48.

A financial problem becomes material.
A bill becomes a drawing.
A creditor becomes part of an art transaction.
And a collector can acquire an artwork by making a debt disappear.

At the center of the project is Sandra Hauser, who operates simultaneously as artist, debtor and CEO of UBD Group. By adopting the language, structures and appearance of a corporation, UBD plays with the mechanisms through which value is produced, communicated and legitimized. And undermines it.

UBD Group does not attempt to separate artistic value from economic reality. It deliberately brings the two together, while at the same time undermining the value system of the art market itself. All Unpaid Bill Drawings have the same format, yet their values differ radically — determined not by size, but by the amount of the original debt.

The project turns Hauser’s own economic circumstances into an artistic production system. Instead of concealing debt as a private failure or treating it as something that has to be resolved before artistic work can begin, Unpaid Bill Drawings uses the problem itself as its raw material.

This approach is characteristic of Sandra Hauser’s practice, in which problems are not necessarily obstacles to a work but can become the starting point of the work itself.

With UBD, this principle becomes an economic model.
